Get fit and help hens at the same time – it’s a win win!

You’re probably completely and utterly stuffed to the brim with Christmas dinner and mince pies by now. So what better way to kick off 2017 than getting fit AND raising money to save hens?! With that in mind, we’ve got some great fundraising initiatives for you to get your teeth (and your feet!) into…

Couch to 5k

Couch to 5K programmes are designed to get absolute beginners off their couch and into running. It really is designed for everyone out there, regardless of current ability and fitness level. And while you’re getting fit you can also encourage others to #chipinforchickens and raise funds for our new Welfare & Education Centre. There are plenty of programmes out there to help you get started, such as the NHS Couch to 5K running plan, which takes just nine weeks to complete.

You can complete the Couch to 5K whenever you like, but we are encouraging those taking part to start their programme early January (to burn off those mince pies!) with a view to run the 5K “race” on or around Pancake Day, between 25 February and 5 March. The run itself can be completed either at a running event or as a virtual run. The latter means you complete the run at your own pace and in your own time.

Every runner will receive a lovely BHWT fitness t-shirt prior to the run, followed by a fab medal and certificate once the run has been completed. We suggest setting up a Just Giving page for organising sponsorship or download a sponsorship form here.

If running isn’t your thing…

We know running isn’t for everyone, including many of us here at Hen Central! There really are an infinite number of ways to challenge yourself and raise money for hens.

Why not walk 25 or 50 kilometres in the beautiful British countryside? TrekFest 2017 is taking place in the Breacon Beacons on the 3 to 4 of June, and the Peak District on the 2 to 3 of September. You can choose your favourite location and enjoy the experience, even with minimum training. Read more about TrekFest 2017 on our website, here.

If you are feeling more adventurous, you can take on a very special challenge – trekking along the Great Wall of China! This is a fantastic five day journey along this magnificent structure, over watchtowers and mountains, through historic battlements and to the top of the ‘Heavenly Ladder’ at Mutianyu. You will place your own brick in a section that is currently being restored, ensuring your imprint is left on the Wall for all time – a very special privilege, unique to this experience with Global Adventure Challenges. Budding cyclists can take on the fantastic London to Paris bike ride on the 19 to the 23 of June. The route goes along quiet French country lanes, through traditional market towns with views of the rolling green fields of northern France, passing the war memorials and cemeteries of the Somme. The pièce de résistance of this cycle challenge will be the final cycle up the Champs Elysées to the Arc de Triomphe, following in the tyre tracks of the cycling greats, before watching them cycle the same route the next day in the finale of the Tour de France!
