Chicken & Egg Issue 10 - Spring 2015 - page 5

Chicken & Egg is a publication by
The British Hen Welfare Trust
The British Hen Welfare Trust is a national charity that re-homes commercial laying hens,
educates the public about how they can make a difference to hen welfare, and
encourages support for the British egg industry. Its ultimate aim is to see consumers and food
manufacturers buying only UK produced free range eggs, resulting in a strong British egg industry where
all commercial laying hens enjoy a good quality life.

Dear Supporters
Mmmm, lip-licking scrumptious. What?
The cake I’m eating … it’s our 10
anniversary, we’ve re-homed hundreds
of thousands of hens, and my dream
continues … do I need more reasons to
eat cake?! This is such a special and
happy edition of
Chicken & Egg
me; I’m tickled pink that the British Hen
Welfare Trust is celebrating its 10
birthday – and yes, time flies!
Celebration and cake are the themes throughout, including this
lovely recipe from patron, Jamie Oliver. We have a celebrity
scoop interview with
Dragons’ Den
star, Deborah Meaden, and
we have lots of competitions, including the chance to stay at the
fascinating Poultry Cottage owned by the Landmark Trust. I’ve
been there – trust me, it’s amazing - find out more inside!
We announce the recipients of our new award – The BHWT Egg
Cup and there’s a glorious gallery celebrating some of our very
special girls. I take a trip down memory lane and one of our first
Co-ordinators reflects on what being part of the BHWT has meant
to her. We have all our usual features, too, including some
cracking Stars of the Month, and heartwarming letters from you,
our lovely supporters.
I hope you enjoy this bumper edition, it’s made me laugh, made
me sad, and for those who have been following from the day we
hatched, I hope you agree it’s been one heck of a ride so far! So
grab a glass of fizzy, and enjoy … because this magazine
wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for you.
Warmest wishes
Jane Howorth
