Chicken & Egg is a publication by
The British Hen Welfare Trust
The British Hen Welfare Trust is a national charity that re-homes commercial
laying hens, educates the public about how they can make a difference
to hen welfare, and encourages support for the British egg industry. Its ultimate aim is to see
consumers and food manufacturers buying only UK produced free range eggs, resulting in
a strong British egg industry where all commercial laying hens enjoy a good quality life.

Editor’s letter
The dark nights are back, the
colder weather is on its way ... and
Christmas is around the corner!
What cheery news!
Actually, I’ve never minded the
winter months, they’re a great
opportunity to snuggle up, and on
that basis, this issue is all about
keeping warm, safe and well fed.
We have advice on how to
make sure your hens are kept toasty through the long nights,
we’ve some really exciting news about where the Hen Central
team will be tucked up for winter and we’ve some scrummy
comfort food recipes
for those long, but cosy evenings around
the fire.
Gardener’s World star,
Pippa Greenwood
tells us how her
BHWT ex-bats have impacted on her family life and our own Jean
Gill writes about winding down in the chicken coop. As usual, our
gallery illustrates just how spoilt some hens really are, and we
focus on one of
our wonderful carers
Ruth Burroughs, for
whom the word dedicated would be an understatement!
Last, but not least, we have our
Christmas Gift offerings
for you
our lovely Lisa’s designed some great new cards for us, and
we’ve some gift ideas as well as our 2013 calendar featuring
some of your gorgeous girls.
Thanks for your on going support, and I hope you enjoy
Egg No. 3
Warm wishes,
