Chicken & Egg is a publication by
The British Hen Welfare Trust
The British Hen Welfare Trust is a national charity that re-homes commercial
laying hens, educates the public about how they can make a difference
to hen welfare, and encourages support for the British egg industry. Its ultimate aim is to see
consumers and food manufacturers buying only UK produced free range eggs, resulting in
a strong British egg industry where all commercial laying hens enjoy a good quality life.

Dear Supporters,
I’m writing this swathed in so many
layers I could be a stand-in for
Michelin man … and it’s late May!
I hope by the time
Chicken & Egg
drops through your letterbox that
we are all wearing a lot less
clobber and enjoying a little more
sunshine. Ever the optimist, I
thought it would be nice to include
some
lovely
free range
ice creams
in this issue, and if it’s still chilly in
June, well at least it means less
dribbles down your front.
And who’d have thought a few years ago that we would see the
day when we have a choice over the ingredients we eat in
something as simple as an ice cream, and yet now, for those of
us who love our hens, it’s second nature to check the labels for
the
hen-friendly factor
.
And the list of hen-friendly products is
slowly growing.
With summer officially here, the barbeque season is underway
and we set the record straight on whether or not to use egg whites
on those inevitable burns that come with
the joys of cooking al
fresco
.
We have an interview with McDonalds for those who
prefer fast food without the fuss, and we warmly welcome writer
and journalist,
Martin Gurdon
,
who has written a highly amusing
article about his first ex-bats.
We announce an exciting new campaign in partnership with
Morrisons and, of course, we are thrilled to have
Caroline
Quentin
complete our Celebrity sCoop in this edition, what a
lovely lady she is!
We have hens chilling out with their furry friends in our Gallery, we
have some fabulous
Good Eggs
and lots of other hentastic news,
not least news of a hentastic new chicken treat.
Warm wishes,
Jane
