Nine out of ten eggs…

Nine out of ten eggs …produced outside the EU are from caged hens; this is the latest fact to come out of the International Egg Commission.

Within the UK we know that more than half of all laying hens are free range, but in EU countries such as Lithuania, Portugal, Spain, Greece, Slovakia, Poland, Latvia, Croatia and the Czech Republic – where welfare has little influence – 70% of hens are in enriched cages, very few in barn systems and almost none free range. Countries such as Brazil, India, Iran, Mexico, the Russian Federation and Turkey keep all their laying hens in caged units and do not have to comply with EU rules on enriched cages.

Doesn’t it make our lucky hens, ever so ever so lucky?
