Charity of the month!

This month, Mochdre Veterinary Practice in Wales named us their charity of the month. Read how we got the honour.

For this month’s fundraising focus we would like to give a big thank you to Sarah at the Mochdre Veterinary Practice in Wales. After Sarah rehomed 10 of our lovely girls back in October, she has been updating us on how they are adjusting to their new lives. Originally the plan was to rehome 6 but they left with 10. She told us “When I turned up I was told there was a hen that had been passed over twice because she was a biter. We were asked would we take her, so I took her home and she has been an angel ever since.”

Sarah’s plan to rehome was always on the cards. “It had been a long-term plan for us to have hens and even before Covid-19 my husband had started making the coop. This became a labour of love and we only ever wanted to rehome hens that had not had a great start”

After the passing of her father-in-law, Sarah wanted to donate to a charity that reflected his interests. Sarah informed us that he used to keep his own hens and so they wanted to get involved with the British Hen Welfare Trust. It is a great honour to have been chosen to be their charity of the month.

The team at Mochdre Vets have been amazingly supportive online, helping us to spread the word about Avian Flu on their social media as well as in her veterinary practice.

Since bringing home her new hens, the team have been fundraising at the veterinary practice, setting up a ‘British Beak Off’! By using the hens’ delicious eggs, Sarah and her team have been making some yummy cakes that they have been able to sell over the last few weeks. They even got to judge the competition and name a ‘star beaker’ at the end of it. She even told us that she is hoping to carry on fundraising with a long-term plan to sell the surplus eggs in her practice.

It is amazing to see all the ways that she and the team have got involved, from being a keeper herself to helping others who are hen keepers by making sure they are available to provide crucial hen health advice. We appreciate all that Sarah and the team have done to support the BHWT and it’s a pleasure to be able to share the wonderful news!

Thank you, Sarah and the team, at Mochdre Veterinary Practice.
