International reach of the BHWT

As well as saving thousands of hens from slaughter every year in Great Britain, the BHWT is increasingly helping to improve hen welfare around the world.

We’re doing this by working with other charities, raising awareness through the media, sharing advice and information, and, with the help of our wonderful volunteers, holding online events.

Working with other charities

In 2021, we announced our affiliation with a newly-formed French animal welfare charity, Champs Libres aux Poules (CLaP) which have gone on to save thousands of hens from slaughter and rehome them as pets.

We also connected with the Environment & Animal Society of Taiwan (EAST), to help raise awareness of the plight of commercial hens in a country where around 85% of laying hens are still confined to barren battery cages.

Global media awareness

As well as raising awareness of hen welfare issues in Taiwan, we’ve also been talking about it in Finland’s biggest newspaper, Helsingin Sanomat, on a news site in India and via a TV package that was screened in the USA and China.

Online events

Our volunteers support us in so many ways, we couldn’t do what we do without them! One volunteer who has been helping us to spread our message internationally is Lizzie Gatherer.

During the pandemic, Lizzie held virtual workshops about chickens, accompanied by her pet hens of course, to groups across the UK and in South America, and has since been approached by an organisation in Oman.

Advice for hens everywhere

Our Hen Health webpages and Hen Helpline provide a wealth of information for hen keepers everywhere.

Via our Helpline, we’ve helped a hen in Africa by sharing information about Avian Flu with their keeper and our webpages dedicated to providing guidance on all hen health issues have been viewed by people on almost every continent.
