Could you make your lasting legacy by leaving a gift in your will to the British Hen Welfare Trust?

We all hope to leave the world a little better than we found it. If you are looking for a way to give back long into the future, then why not consider leaving a gift in your Will to the BHWT?

Since we began back in 2005, with your help we have saved over 850,000 hens from slaughter and are on track to save our millionth by 2025! We are also helping hens from more than 49 countries through our MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) for vets and vet students (and indeed anyone interested in hen husbandry), and via our Hen Helpline, the advice line for all hen keepers for which need is growing every day.

Legacies are a vital resource for us. Your gift could help us to save thousands more hens from slaughter, develop our work on improving pet hen health through the expansion of knowledge on poultry care and make positive changes to not only the British egg industry but further afield as well.

Sarah Morgans, one of our amazing flock of supporters knew that she could make a long-term difference to the lives of pet hens,

“I would like to leave a gift in my will to the British Hen Welfare Trust as it is a cause close to my heart. These hens are sent to slaughter at such a young age with very little awareness in general about their hardworking lives. It’s amazing to see the journey that the BHWT has been on since it began, making such a difference to the lives of commercial laying hens. There may come a time when I can no longer re-home hens myself and so I would like to support the thousands of hens facing slaughter in the future by leaving a legacy gift to the BHWT in my will.”

Creating your lasting legacy is really easy to do, see below for details:

  1. Consider who to include in your Will

First think of family and friends who you may like to leave a gift to, most people will want to take care of those closest to them first. Then if you decide that you would like to support the work of the BHWT please give our full details to your solicitor. These are-

British Hen Welfare Trust, a charity registered in England number 1147356, registered office address Hope Chapel, Rose Ash, South Molton, Devon, England EX36 4RF.

  • Decide what you would like to give

There are two main types of gifts that you could choose to leave to your chosen charity or charities,

  • A pecuniary gift is a fixed amount of money
  • A residuary gift is a share or percentage of the balance of your estate once all other gifts are made. This is often the preferred choice as it keeps in line with inflation and doesn’t lose value over time
  • Choose your executors

Those trusted people who will fulfil your choices and are named in your will.

  • Remember Inheritance tax

Leaving a gift to a charity is free of Inheritance tax so this will reduce your overall tax bill whilst giving back to a cause you love.

  • Visit your solicitor

Who will be able to make all of the final amendments for you.

  • If you feel comfortable in doing so, please do let us know if you decide to leave us a gift

The decision to let us know is of course entirely yours to make, but should you choose to let us know we would love to be able to thank you and let you know how your gift could make a difference.

If you decide to make a lasting legacy to the BHWT we want to say a huge THANK YOU for supporting the hens of the future who otherwise might only ever see 72 weeks of life before being sent to slaughter. THANK YOU on behalf of the flocks and families who will benefit from welcoming the thousands of new hen recruits, and THANK YOU from us for supporting our work in making positive change to the egg industry all across the world.

Make your lasting legacy, and consider leaving a gift in your Will to the BHWT.
