A huge thank you to everyone that's donated to our Christmas appeal so far, we can now successfully offer 36 out of our 45 teams the right equipment and access to hen-friendly vets to help them treat hens in need of extra care.

Will you help a poorly hen this Christmas?

As a supporter of the BHWT, you’re united with us in our mission to help every hen we can reach. To us, all hens deserve the chance at a new life once their commercial laying days are over and from the moment we collect them from farms, it’s our responsibility to help them no matter what.

We successfully rehome thousands of hens every year, but some sadly reach us in a pretty sorry state. It is only because of our incredibly dedicated volunteers that these poorly hens get a chance at life.

Whilst with us, we give them a health check to assess their weight and ensure they have no visible signs of injury or ill health. If we have any concerns about a hen’s health, we’ll give her special care with a poorly carer until she’s well and ready to be adopted.

With knowledge, commitment and space, our poorly carers know how to help with all sorts of conditions, but sometimes extra help is needed from vets experienced in hen welfare.

Whilst many of these hens go on to live happy lives in their new homes once they’ve recovered, some need ongoing care and remain with carers. Just like any other pet in need of care, we never give up on a hen and do all we can to secure them a happy future.

Will you help them too?

However, with 45 teams we now need your help more than ever to purchase heat lamps, feeders and drinkers and cosy crates for poorly hens to feel safe in, as well as vital funds to meet vet visits and treatments. £1,000 annually per team could help to support our poorly hens.

Whatever you can donate will make a huge difference. Supporting us with a monthly gift by Direct Debit gives us the continued help we need to care for poorly hens. It also gives you the reassurance that we can carry on doing this vital work.

Warmest wishes for a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Pickle’s story

Pickle came into my care because she had a broken leg. The break was at the top of her leg and although tricky, a vet was able to splint it. I created a frame for her and sewed a sling to support her. I had some painkillers from the vet and made sure she had lots of good food to help build her bones. Pickle lived in our conservatory whilst she got better with a variety of food and drink within beaking distance. Her leg did heal and although she walked with a limp, she didn’t let it stop her getting the life she deserved. The first time I saw her scratching the ground with the poorly leg was so special, she got to be the chicken she always should have been

Peggy's story

peggys story

I’ve cared for multiple poorly hens over the last 13 years and I guess Peggy is one that will forever stand out. She was the first girl I looked after with a broken leg and she has remained.
Girls with broken legs need to be kept separate day and night so they are not disadvantaged or further injured by quicker, healthy and more agile birds. They need pain relief twice a day, their own shelter, feeder and drinker handily placed.
I have worked very closely with my vet over the years to develop my knowledge but there are often cases that need to be referred.

With your support, we can make sure that all our poorly carers have the right equipment and access to hen-friendly vets to help them treat hens in need of extra care.
Whatever you can spare will make a huge difference.
