Funeral, memorial & celebration of life collections

Many families choose to request donations instead of flowers at a funeral or memorial service. This can be a meaningful way for friends and family to honour a loved one while supporting a cause close to their heart.

You can collect donations by setting up an online tribute page or taking donations in person.

  • Online: Donate in memory via our website (hyperlink to donation form at bottom).
  • By cheque: Send a cheque payable to The British Hen Welfare Trust to.
Hen Central, Rose Ash, South Molton, Devon, EX36 4RF (FAO: In Memory Manager). Please include a note with your loved one’s name and the name of the person or funeral director organising the collection.

Fundraising in memory

Taking part in a fundraising event or challenge in memory of a loved one can be a powerful way to celebrate their life while making a real difference. Whether it’s a sponsored walk, bake sale, or taking on a big challenge, your efforts will help save and rehome more hens.

Set up a Facebook Fundraiser

If you regularly connect with friends and family on Facebook, setting up a Facebook Fundraiser is a simple and effective way to collect donations in memory.

To ensure your donations are recorded in memory of your loved one, please email fundraise@bhwt.org.uk or call 01884 860084.

  1. Go to ‘Fundraisers’ in the left menu of your Facebook News Feed.
  2. Select ‘Raise Money’ and choose ‘Nonprofit/Charity’.
  3. Select ‘British Hen Welfare Trust’, add a cover photo, and personalise your fundraiser.
  4. Share your fundraiser with friends and family.

Add 25% more to your donation at no cost to you.
A Gift Aid declaration allows the British Hen Welfare Trust to claim tax back on eligible donations. It means that for every £1 you donate to the British Hen Welfare Trust we can claim back 25p, at no extra cost to you.
By ticking the "Yes" box, I agree I would like the British Hen Welfare Trust to reclaim the tax on all qualifying donations I have made, as well as any future donations, until I notify them otherwise. I understand that if I pay less Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all my donations in that tax year I may be asked to pay any difference. I understand that the British Hen Welfare Trust will reclaim 25p of tax on every £1 that I give.

If your hen is struggling to breathe, has been attacked by a fox, has been straining to lay an egg for more than one day or is experiencing fly strike where maggots are present please visit a vet immediately as there may be a delay before we can respond.

In Memory donations FAQs

An in-memory gift is a special way to honour a loved one by donating to a cause that mattered to them. Family and friends may choose to give in memory of someone who has passed away—perhaps to a charity they supported, an organisation that helped them or a loved one, or a cause that reflects their values.

These thoughtful donations are often called ‘in memory’ gifts, but you may also hear them referred to as ‘tribute’, ‘remembrance’, ‘memorial’, or ‘in honour’ donations.

Yes, if you’re a UK taxpayer, you can add Gift Aid to your donation at no extra cost to you. This means we can claim an extra 25p from the Government for every £1 you donate, helping your gift go even further.
Please note:

  • Gift Aid can only be applied to personal donations, not collections made on behalf of a group.
  • If you’re organising a collection or sponsored event, each individual donor will need to complete a Gift Aid declaration for their contribution to be eligible.
  • Gift Aid cannot be claimed on raffle tickets, auctions, or pooled collections.

At the moment, we’re unable to mark Direct Debit donations as being in memory of someone.

We’re working to make this possible in the future. In the meantime, you might like to create a tribute page on our Memory Wall—a comforting place to remember your loved one and celebrate their life.

Many funeral directors, celebrants, and faith leaders will ask if you’d like to organise a collection as part of planning a loved one’s service.

You can set up an online collection for the BHWT via MuchLoved, or collect donations at the service and send them to us by cheque or online.

It’s really helpful if you do! Letting us know means we can look out for donations and make sure they’re correctly recorded as a tribute to your loved one. If we don’t know about your collection, it may be harder to track all contributions and update you on the total raised.

  1. Create – Visit Much Loved, our tribute page partner, and enter your loved one’s details. On the second page, select “BHWT” or enter our charity number 1147356 to link your donations to us.
  2. Remember – Add special memories, stories, and photos of your loved one.
  3. Share – Invite family and friends to contribute their own messages, memories, and donations.
  • By phone: Call our friendly Fundraising Team on 01884 860084.
  • Online: Visit www.bhwt.org.uk/donate/give-a-donation-in-memory/. Please include your loved one’s name so we can record your tribute.
  • By cheque: Make your cheque payable to The British Hen Welfare Trust and send it to:Hen Central, Rose Ash, South Molton, Devon, EX36 4RF (FAO: In Memory Manager) Please include a note letting us know who you’re remembering, and if possible, the name of the person or funeral director organising the collection.
