Leave a Legacy

Imagine leaving a gift which will have an impact on the welfare of millions of hens in the future.

Your legacy

By remembering the British Hen Welfare Trust in your Will you will be saving hens from slaughter and giving them the chance to live out their days in the most natural way. Your gift will mean more hens becoming beloved pets throughout Britain, enjoying the free-range retirement they so thoroughly deserve. Education will be vital in shaping future attitudes to hen welfare and through our expanding schools programme we can influence young minds and future decision makers.

If hen welfare is important to you then a gift to the BHWT is the perfect way to continue your love and passion for hens beyond your lifetime.

"I would like to leave a gift in my Will to the British Hen Welfare Trust as it is a cause close to my heart. These hens are sent to slaughter at such a young age with very little awareness in general about their hardworking lives. It’s amazing to see the journey that the BHWT has been on since it began, making such a difference to the lives of commercial laying hens. There may come a time when I can no longer rehome hens myself and so I would like to support the thousands of hens facing slaughter in the future by leaving a legacy gift to the BHWT in my Will."

“The BHWT has genuinely changed the course of my life. Without them, I would never have come to know the plight of commercial laying hens and adopt my own girls, who are now so much a part of our family. They do such good work for such a small charity, so I hope that one day I can do my part in helping save even more hens and educate far more people about just how important a cause it is, by leaving a gift in my Will.”

Your will, your wishes

Making a Will is the only way to make sure your wishes are carried out after you’re gone. Naturally, you will want to think about your loved ones first; however, you may then wish to consider leaving a gift to the charity or charities which mean the most to you. We strongly recommend you seek advice from a professional Will writer such as a solicitor when you are ready.

If you would like to leave a gift to us, it is very important that the name of the charity, the British Hen Welfare Trust and the charity number 1147356, are clearly shown. Remember to keep your Will up to date – if you marry, divorce, separate or are widowed, you will need to alter it and your solicitor or Will writer can easily do this using a form called a codicil.

Please contact our legacy team to find out more by emailing fundraise@bhwt.co.uk or by calling 01884 860084.

There are 3 types of legacy gift

  • residual legacy is where the gift is all (or part) of the value of your estate, after expenses and other legacies have been paid
  • pecuniary legacy is the gift of a particular sum of money
  • specific request is the gift of a particular item (a piece of jewellery, for example)
Residual legacies are especially valuable to your beneficiaries as they are protected from the effects of inflation.  Gifts to charity are tax-free so not only will your gift save hens’ lives it will also reduce your inheritance tax liability.
