Educational Workshops

COVID-19 LATEST UPDATE
We would like to support schools, and all their wonderful staff, still caring for children during the COVID-19 outbreak. BHWT will be running mini-workshops and Q&A sessions via video link for children in school. If you are a teacher and are interested in a session held via video link, please contact us at education@bhwt.co.uk for more information.

Educational Workshops

Our free educational workshops can be delivered to schools and youth groups across the UK. The BHWT’s workshops explore elements of science and social and emotional aspects of learning, in line with the National Curriculum, alongside egg production and animal welfare. Pupils may also have to opportunity to meet some friendly ex-bat hens, and learn more about their story from farm to much-loved family pet.

A summary of the workshops we offer can be seen below. If your school is interested in holding a workshop simply fill out the form at the bottom of this page and we will be in touch soon.

Whilst our workshops are predominantly aimed at primary-aged pupils, we have run sessions for secondary groups and special schools. If you would like a workshop at your school, please get in touch with our Education Officer as we may be able to tailor a visit to suit your needs. We can also offer Hen Care Sessions for schools which keep their own hens or assemblies for the whole school.

Please note that if live hens are present, we can only offer a maximum of two workshops in one day. Each workshop lasts around one hour and the maximum number of pupils per workshop is 35.

Amazing Eggs

In this workshop pupils learn how the different parts of the egg help a chick grow, how eggs can form part of a healthy diet, and the difference between a caged and a free-range egg.

Five Important Things

In this workshop pupils will discover what chickens and other animals need to be happy and healthy, and learn who is responsible for the care of animals on a daily and ongoing basis.

Claws Wings and Things

In this workshop pupils learn how a chicken digests, reproduces and uses her senses, and understand what their own bodies have in common with birds and other animal groups.

Our volunteers

BHWT’s Education Team and Education Volunteers are all DBS-checked and undertake training before visiting schools. Our speakers will often be accompanied by couple of their friendliest pet hens for children to meet and learn more about. If you would prefer not to have hens brought to your school, or already have some of your own, let our Education Officer know during the booking process.
