Hot Weather Tips

Summer is a bit erratic this year, but during the hot spells it’s really important for you to help your hens cool down.

We all love the summer days when the sun shines and the rain and mud of winter months seem a distant memory. Hens enjoy nothing more than a good sunbathe, but it’s also important to make sure they don’t overheat. Here are some summer tips to keep your chickens comfortable in the summer sun.

Make sure your girls have access to plenty of cool water. It seems like an obvious necessity during times of extreme heat, but we can’t stress the importance of giving your girls a cooling beverage enough. Water in drinkers will soon warm up in the midday sun, so keep their supply fresh.

Shade is also vitally important to help your flock cool down; hens enjoy sunshine but prefer to shelter from the strength of the midday sun and will like to be able to move in and out of the shade throughout the day.

Provide dust bath areas for your hens, they will appreciate the chance to get ‘clean’, especially in warmer weather.

Ensure your hen house is well ventilated; wire mesh across windows can allow better air flow without compromising security.

Warm weather brings out the uninvited guests in your hen house and early summer is a good time to treat your birds for red mite which can cause them irritation during the summer months.

If your hens are feather-bare, you may need to apply sun cream to their skin, or ensure they avoid the midday sun; bald hens suffer from sunburn just like we do.
