Together we have rehomed our
ONE MILLIONTH HEN
We’ve rehomed ONE MILLION HENS!
On Saturday, 17th August 2024, surrounded by cheers and the sound of corks popping, we rehomed our ONE MILLIONTH HEN!
It was a day that will go down in the charity’s history, not just because of the milestone itself, but also because that very special hen went to live with none other than His Majesty King Charles III at Highgrove House in Tetbury.
Personally named by His Majesty, Henrietta and 30 others joined the Royal flock to live out her free-range retirement in stunning surroundings.
She travelled in true style to her new home in a bespoke carrier handcrafted by British fashion designer Lulu Guinness in one of many ‘pinch-me’ moments never to be forgotten.
We’ve had an amazing response to the news of our one millionth hen; she’s even gone global! Thank you to everyone who’s shared, liked and commented on our social posts. Click the links below to see the full reaction to Henrietta’s arrival.
Help us reach our next millionth hen faster!
Without generous donations from supporters like yourself we simply would not have rehomed one million hens – thank you.
However, after the first million hens comes the next million hens which is why we would ask you to consider donating whatever you can to help us carry on our vital work into the future.
We can only keep changing lives with your support.
Thank you. From the day I started this charity, it’s been a privilege and a joy to meet and work with so many people who want to help hens. I am ridiculously excited about the imminent arrival of our ONE MILLIONTH, and look forward to raising a toast to her! And then to starting our countdown to the next million. My heartfelt thanks go to everyone involved in making this world-first achievement a reality.

We have had hens ourselves when our boys were younger, and it was the first time I ever tasted a ‘real’ egg. Since then, I’ve learned more about the difference between free-range and organic eggs, and I think the BHWT is a really worthwhile endeavour, so to be able to help them is a very nice thing.

I’ve been a keen supporter of the British Hen Welfare Trust for some years as I believe chickens are one of the most underrated animals on earth. This is the first time I’ve re-homed through the charity; I collected eight hens from Sturminster Newton on 21 May and they’re settling in well with my existing flock. It’s wonderfully rewarding to be able to give these hard working girls a loving home, and I hope this will be the first of many re-homings I undertake.

No words seem enough to sum up the amazing work the Trust does! Absolutely incredible! You’re all stars! You should be so proud! Thank you so much from me and millions of others… people and hens.
Mrs Hinch, Adopter
I think the work that the British Hen Welfare Trust does is invaluable. My favourite thing about chickens is undoubtedly getting to try the lovely eggs laid fresh every day. Nothing beats a fresh farm egg, all of my friends and family members literally take it in turns to take home a box and they ALWAYS want to meet the girls who lay them! It’s a great way for my son, Ace, to bond with animals too.

We are proud to support the British Hen Welfare Trust who we work closely with to rehome all of our Daylesford hens with local families when it’s time for them to retire from commercial laying. It’s amazing that later this year they will be rehoming their millionth hen. Our Daylesford flock range freely on our 30-acre agroforestry site. We have 7,000 hens living in 13 mobile arks on our Cotswold farm. Made up of a mix of rare and native British breeds including Lohmann Browns and Legbars, famous for their pastel blue eggshells. As part of the millionth rehoming celebrations and to support the work of the wonderful trust we are donating £1 from every dish of eggs Benedict ordered in our cafés from today.

Bake and make ONE MILLION more hens happy!
ONE MILLION hens… just think of all the eggs those lucky ladies have laid. And the number of delicious cakes, bakes and treats that have been whipped up using them! As part of our celebrations we’re asking our star bakers to dust off their aprons, collect the freshest eggs only your own hens can provide and get baking to raise one million pennies!
Register your interest here to receive a bake sale pack with special ONE MILLIONTH HEN fundraising tips and limited edition gold cake toppers!
An eggs-cellent way to help hen welfare!
We’ve had a cracking idea for our Egg Clubbers for the ONE MILLIONTH milestone. We hope to raise £10,000 (that’s one million pennies!) to help purchase equipment for hen welfare courses.
We’re asking YOU to join our wonderful Egg Clubbers who politely encourage their hens to help other hens by continuing to lay eggs in exchange for a donation. Some take retirement seriously and won’t consider it, others are only too happy to help and we’ve got some special ONE MILLIONTH egg box labels and BHWT story cards to help raise awareness amongst family and friends. How helpful are your hens?
A quiche collaboration
We’ve always been proud to sing our praises of Higgidy who place the welfare of the hens laying the eggs they use at the forefront. This year, we’re excited to announce the launch of a limited edition quiche which, not only sounds DELICIOUS but celebrates our milestone achievement!
Higgidy will donate £5,000 from the sales of these quiches (available from Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Ocado and Booths) so we’d love to see them feature at your summer soirees and picnics.
