Trailer update

Thousands of hens are enjoying free-range life thanks to two new trailers funded by Support Adoption For Pets.

The Trust donated £8,500 to the British Hen Welfare Trust last year, which funded two brand new trailers for the charity’s Kent (Biggin Hill) and Wiltshire (Swindon) re-homing teams.

Previously the teams had been relying on the generosity of volunteers’ vehicles to help move the birds.

Since the new trailers arrived they have seen thousands of hens transported away from their colony cages and into loving, free-range homes.

Witshire co-ordinator, Gareth Harries, said: “The new trailers have been a fantastic addition to the smooth running of our team’s rehoming days. Firstly, they are bigger so it means we can re-home more chickens.

“Then there’s fact that we own it which means we can leave it on site, thanks to our wonderful host, Conta, and not have to worry about whose trailer we need to borrow.

“And as it has the BHWT sign on the side it’s great for promoting the charity when on the road and on site.”

Amy Wilson, charity manager at Support Adoption For Pets, said: “It is a real privilege to help an organization which works so hard to rehome hens across the country. They are doing a superb job, and the effort the rescue puts in is an inspiration.”

Each trailer can transport up to 600 hens, and the teams hold re-homing days every four to six weeks.
